Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL decided to continue with the 2020 draft. The 2020 NFL Draft will begin April 23rd and it will end April 25th. Since we are getting close to draft day, I want to take some time to tell you who I think the Bengals should select with the number 1 overall pick.
I have seen a variety of different mock drafts and the experts believe the Bengals will select QB Joe Burrow out of LSU. I am not saying the experts are wrong (more than likely that is who the Bengals will select), but I want to offer my two cents. I think the Bengals should either select DE Chase Young out of Ohio St., or trade down and select a QB later in the first round (maybe Justin Herbert out of Oregon or Jordan Love out of Utah St.). I know you are probably thinking no way they don’t select Burrow, maybe you are right. I just don’t think it is the right move for the Bengals because I believe Chase Young will have an immediate impact and the QB position is arguably the hardest position to transition from college to NFL. If you don’t believe me then let’s take a closer look at the number 1 overall draft selections from 2010 to 2019, and you will see what I am talking about.
2010: QB Sam Bradford Rams
2011: QB Cam Newton Panthers
2012: QB Andrew Luck Colts
2013: OT Eric Fisher Chiefs
2014: DE Jadeveon Clowney Texans
2015: QB Jameis Winston Buccaneers
2016: QB Jared Goff Rams
2017: DE Myles Garrett Browns
2018: QB Baker Mayfield Browns
2019: QB Kyler Murray Cardinals
As you can see, there has been 7 QBs out 10 players selected with the number 1 overall pick. So far, (it might be early to tell on some) I only see one QB (Cam Newton – Offensive Rookie of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, MVP, 3x Pro Bowler, 1 time All-Pro, and a Super Bowl appearance) that has turned into a star and has lived up to the expectations of a number 1 overall pick. The other QBs don’t even come close to Newton’s accomplishments.
The Bengals will need to really think this one through, are they getting a Cam Newton if they select Joe Burrow? The odds do not favor the Bengals. That is the reason why I believe they need to either play it safe and select Chase Young (who many scouts have given him a star potential grade), or trade down and draft a QB later in the first round.
